Producer Profile

Cristiana Galasso epitomizes Feudo d'Ugni, a winery she refers to as the fruit of her role as a "matchmaker vintner." With a background in the arts, Cristiana eventually felt a compelling draw to return to her familial heritage—the pastoral lifestyle and viticulture. Nestled in the serene high hills, shadowed by the majestic Maiella, she found her calling.

Embarking on her viticultural journey in 2001 with a modest plot of white grapevines, Cristiana expanded by leasing a Montepulciano vineyard the following year. By 2004, she celebrated her inaugural bottling, marking each milestone with deliberate and thoughtful progress.

Cristiana's venture into winemaking is a testament to her resilience and dedication. Operating single-handedly, she started from the ground up, residing in a small trailer amidst her vines. Her winery, set in a rustic stone house, echoes the artisanal spirit of her endeavors. The labor is intensive and manual, aided only by the modest assistance of a pre-owned crawler tractor.

Her perseverance bore fruit in 2006 with her first official bottling, which was met with acclaim, setting a precedent for the excellence and authenticity that Feudo d'Ugni's wines now embody.

Wine Region

Abruzzo's winemaking heritage is deep-rooted, tracing back to the Etruscans and Romans who cultivated vines in this central Italian region. Over centuries, local monasteries preserved winemaking traditions, ensuring continuity and refinement. By the 20th century, Abruzzo emerged as a significant wine-producing area, recognized for its quality and tradition.

The terroir of Abruzzo is unique, shaped by its position between the Adriatic Sea and the Apennine Mountains. Its varied landscape offers coastal plains, rolling hills, and mountainous areas, which provide a range of microclimates. The soils here are diverse, with a mix of clay, limestone, and pebbles. These conditions, coupled with a temperate climate, create an ideal environment for viticulture.

Abruzzo is famed for its Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, a robust red wine that embodies the region's character. Another notable variety is Trebbiano d'Abruzzo, a zesty white that has gained international acclaim. Abruzzo's winemakers are embracing organic and biodynamic practices, contributing to the growing popularity of natural wines from this region. These wines express the rich, variegated essence of Abruzzo's land and history.
